The Studio
A practice grounded in craft, theory and collaboration.
M.J.Suttie Architects is an interdisciplinary studio offering architecture, interior and urban design. Our work is guided by an openness to classical and vernacular traditions, paired with a practical understanding of contemporary construction.
With each stage of a project, from concept, design development, DA to construction and delivery, we combine a range of methods and techniques from specialist hand drafting, watercolour rendering, 3D modelling and VR technology to communicate designs most efficiently and productively to clients and consultants.
Through ongoing engagement with the art of building, we foster strong relationships with builders, consultants and craftspeople. This collaborative approach supports quality, efficiency and economy, and allows us to create places that meet the threefold demands of functionality, durability and beauty.
MICHAEL SUTTIE
Director / Architect
B.Eng, M.Arch.
Michael graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering from UNSW after a year working in the mines of outback WA. Soon after, he travelled to Europe and was inspired by the timeless beauty of the built heritage of Western civilisation during his work as a stonemason, carpenter and artisan in the UK, France, Italy, Belgium and Athens. Notably, Michael worked at Fairhaven Stone Ltd in Cambridgeshire, closely associated with Sotheby’s and Kindersley Studio.
Michael eventually returned to Australia after a decade with a Master’s degree in Classical and Traditional Architecture and Urbanism from the University of Notre Dame, IN, and the Notre Dame Study Centre in Rome. Since returning to Australia in 2008, Michael has been working to change the culture of architecture in Australia through his growing practice, M.J Suttie Architects, currently engaged in a wide variety of residential, ecclesiastical, educational and urban planning projects around the country.
All the projects strive to put into practice the classical ideals of architecture to build beautiful, functional and durable places. Alongside passionate clients, and increasingly in the realm of sacred architecture, Michael has realised the potential of inspiration and meaningful design, building with the finest materials and reputable craftsmen.
